Are you doing that as a feel-good exercise or do you know something I don't know to indicate that your act in some way penalizes Chavez?
Boycotts are personal exercises of the power of the purse, no matter how small. If you don't approve of a company's policies, one boycott may not make much of a difference, but if enough people boycott a business it gets their attention, and may cause them to change their minds.
Citgo used to be my regular gas station. I was pleased to see, recently, that 7-11 severed their relationship with Citgo, which used to be their primary gas supplier. Since Citgo is owned by the country of Venezuela, yes, I think this demonstrates that there are plenty of Americans who don't want to give Chavez financial support.
I am also boycotting Costco, because (according to my older son) they use the Kelo case to persuade municipalities to use eminent domain to seize private property for their own use. In deference to his request, I did not renew my Costco membership. We used to spend at least $5K a year there.
I substituted Sam's Club, which, by happy coincidence, also has very cheap gas. |
