SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Monsanto (MON :

MON47.03, -0.62, -1.3% ) said Tuesday that it expects to launch in the spring a new hybrid corn that will contain increased oil content for use by ethanol producers as well as the nutrients necessary to feed fast-growing animals like chickens. "We're redesigning (corn) to meet the needs of ethanol grain and high quality feed materials," said the agricultural science firm's chief technology officer Robb Fraley at a Citigroup conference. "The net result is more starch through the ethanol plant and more energy for animal feed." A jump in demand for corn-based ethanol, as gasoline additive seen as reducing petroleum consumption, has put pressure on the supply of corn used for livestock and human consumption. Monsanto is developing the new corn through its Renessen LLC joint venture with Cargill and plans to open a pilot plant for the product in Eddyville, Iowa in the first quarter. Monsanto shares rose 2.4% to $47.98. End of Story
