AMSTERDAM, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Electronic chip maker NXP unveiled a small new chip aimed at boosting the popularity of WiMAX wireless Internet on Wednesday and also said it had appointed former BT (BT.L: Quote, Profile, Research) Chief Executive Peter Bonfield as chairman of its supervisory board.
NXP, which last week was spun off from Philips Electronics (PHG.AS: Quote, Profile, Research) (PHG.N: Quote, Profile, Research) which still owns 20 percent of the shares, said the new chip is already in full commercial production and is the world's first fully integrated WiMAX chip for the mobile version of the wireless network technology.
The mobile version of WiMAX is expected to be the breakthrough for this technology which promises fast wireless Internet access. Until now, WiMAX could only be used when computers are stationary. NXP said it had anticipated the outcome of a standardisation process for the mobile WiMAX version which has just been concluded.
NXP, the world's 10th biggest chip maker, said the chip will cost around $15 when ordered in small volumes and measures just a few centimetres. It consumes so little energy it can fit inside a PC card or a USB stick connected to a laptop computer.
