Bedfordshire County's Reader Comments on Commodity Investments
2006-10-04 12:50 (New York)

By Saijel Kishan
Oct. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Geoff Reader, strategic adviser at
Bedfordshire County Council, comments on investing in commodities.
Reader spoke at the Commodity Investment World conference in
London today.
The Bedfordshire Pension Fund has 34,000 members and less
than 1 billion pounds ($1.8 billion) in assets. The fund invested
5 percent of its assets in commodities this year and chose Credit
Suisse Group to manage its investment.

``We decided we had to diversify from stocks and bonds to
reduce our liabilities. Of all the alternative investments,
commodities attracted a lot of attention from our trustees.''

``We like the commodity story and it's a good way to
diversify from our other assets. We had to jump through a lot of
hoops to get the commodity investments going.''

``We chose the Dow Jones AIG Commodity Index because our
panel knew that commodities were a volatile asset class, but
didn't want our investments to be that volatile'' and wanted to
limit it, he said.

``We are still one of the few pension funds in the U.K. that
has invested in commodities and were expecting a volatile asset
class. We haven't been disappointed in that regard.
