It's important not to confuse cause and effect or correlation and causation: <I begin to think politics makes people nutz >

People who seek power over other people are ipso facto psycho. Well, not really insane, so much as sub-human. They are more closely related to chimpanzees than humans. Humans act in co-operative ways, not dominant conquest ways.

Dominant chimps use the tribe to gain territory then help themselves to the perks of office. Humans evolved from that, going through 10s of thousands of years of improvement towards the human condition, which is now a fairly common thing in most people at least part of the time.

Sometimes though, most people can't help but drop down onto their knuckles and revert to type, if only for a brief time. It's hard work, walking around on one's hind legs all day, pretending to be human [for some people].

Which is not to say all politicians are knuckle-dragging chimp throwbacks. There is such a thing as cooperative people and there is no reason at all that cooperative politicians couldn't gain "power". They would be called Libertarian. A political system they run would be quite different from the Saddam Hussein model, which most human societies follow, albeit with some democratic or other process to make it a bit more civil.

The problem is not the water supply in Washington, it's the ideas of the voters who put the people there.
