>>>High oil prices make economic to drill at very deep below the ocean bed.<<<

There is a small debate about "abiotic oil." Abiotic oil refers to oil that was "always there" in the earth's crust, and just oozes up into the reservoirs, and in fact replaces that which has already been produced.

Most petroleum geologists (95%) believe that oil comes from dead dinosaurs, and that abiotic oil is a myth. With high temperatures and pressures, the dinosaur juices are broken down into shorter hydrocarbons - oil. With even higher temps and pressures, they are broken al the way into natural gas.

A long way around, but I recall that the common thinking is that below 2K feet, the fraction of gas vice oil starts getting very high. I would expect the "Jack" field in GOM to be mostly gas by that construct, but I seem to be in error.
