True - but there is no national photo ID card. Many people don't even have their real SS card (I lost mine years ago). The number is key but it doesn't serve as a foolproof ID system.

Many illegals work on fake SSNs or share an SSN or some variation of that. Voter registration is still handled on a county level where it is easier to verify someone's residency through other documentation.

For example, I just moved to Virginia but I won't be settled in my house until just before the election. I can't get my drivers license until I prove I live in a house in VA, so I can't register to vote until it is too late.

I could vote in Texas where I am still registered through an absentee ballot like I have for many years. But voting there is pretty pointless in the current political environment. A very one-sided red state with heavily gerrymandered Congressional districts.
