I think you need to look at Foley from the "Daily Kos" "Democratic Underground" mind set, which is rather puerile and shallow.

In their minds, all Republicans are Religious Right, and not just Religious Right, but ones who think homosexuals should be burned at the stake. It never crosses their minds that this cartoon image bears little resemblance to reality.

Thus, it also never crosses their minds that Foley was NOT in the closet but lived and socialized with a boyfriend back home. He didn't flaunt his sexual preferences, he kept his private life private, but he didn't do as so many closeted homosexuals have done and get married to put on a show. Good for him.

He resigned because it was a breach of House ethics, something that, again, the "Daily Kos" and "Democratic Underground" can't imagine.

He did something wrong that many others have done, Republicans and Democrats both, but he got caught, and he resigned, which was the right thing to do.

Would that Democrats in his shoes had that much decency. It goes a little way towards restoring one's faith that the institution knows the meaning of that word, decency.
