True, but I don't see how the point is important. Whoever it is paid to it is a subsidy paid to someone. I'm not bashing ethanol producers (if I was your point would be relevant), I'm arguing against the subsidy.

You put direct subsidy in quotes as if there isn't any, but there is. The fact that it doesn't go to ethanol producers (at least not in any direct way) doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
