Eracer:

Imagine the bottleneck on AMD's quad-core CPU due out this year. There is no silicon, therefore no performance. At least AMD's 2006 4x0 quad-core CPU is cheap.

Its no less available than Kentsfield at this point. And you should see the last page of that Tom's Hardware Article: tomshardware.com

"Last Friday, the AMD public relations machinery made it possible to show us a last-minute demo of a working 4x4 system using a HP Halo video conferencing/collaboration system. For those who are not familiar with Halo: It is a triple-display, High Definition audio/video conference system with a fourth display that is attached to a High Definition zoom camera. These setups start at about $100k, but they deliver an experience as if you were sitting next to each other - or next to the technology that is shown off. We were shown a dual processor socket AM2 platform that was powered by unregistered Samsung DDR2-800 memory (rated CL-5-5-5-15) and two Nvidia GeForce 7950GX2 graphics cards."

It will be out in November. It may be out before Kentsfield. And it will be available from HP.

Kentsfield desktop systems will have either two or four sticks of DDR2

And it will have worse performance with 2 channels of memory than two 2.66GHz Woodcrest systems with 4 channels of memory. They keep making the straw thinner and longer. 4x4 will use 4 sticks of DDR2-800 far wider and faster than Kentsfield with 4 sticks of DDR2-533. So 2.66GHz Kentsfield will have less performance than 2.66GHz Woodcrest while FX-72 4x4 will have more performance than 2 Opteron 2220s. And FX-74 4x4 will have even more than FX-72s. And the FX series will still be unlocked.
