:Pelosi nixed Freeh investigation of Foley scandal

House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) scheduled a press conference in Batavia, Ill., Thursday to announce that former FBI Director Louis Freeh would be asked to conduct an investigation of the House page program and recommend reforms of it. But Hastert made no mention of Freeh during his press appearance because House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) rejected Freeh’s proposed involvement, said House Republicans.

"The Speaker reached out to Democrat Leader Pelosi and shared with her that Louis Freeh would be a great choice to strengthen the security of the House Page program," said a top House GOP leadership aide. "Pelosi rejected the idea because she wanted to focus attention on the investigation."

Pelosi’s staff did not immediately return a request for comment.

The Democratic leader may have balked at Freeh having an investigative role in the scandal because many Democrats view him as a Republican ally.

Freeh’s 2005 book, "My FBI: Bringing Down the Mafia, Investigating Bill Clinton, and Fighting the War on Terror," was severely critical of Clinton.

Former Clinton aide Sidney Blumenthal once called Freeh "bar-none Clinton’s worst appointment."
