"Democratic Voters More Energized

In new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, 51% of Democrats "express highest possible level of interest in the elections, compared with 43% of Republicans. Democratic edge on that harbinger of motivation to vote is up slightly from 51% to 46% edge in early September."

However, senior citizens back Democrats to control Congress by 48% to 43% -- smaller than party’s overall edge among all voters. An earlier survey suggested seniors could be the key to victory in November.

In Ohio, Brown Increases Lead

Sen. Mike DeWine (R-OH) is struggling in his bid for reelection against Rep. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), according to a new Rasmussen Reports poll. Brown has increased his lead by two points since September, currently winning 49% to 41%.

Evangelicals Tiring of GOP

A new Pew Research Center poll finds that the rock solid support Republicans have been receiving from white evangelical Christians, who in 2004 "made up a quarter of the electorate, and 78 percent of them voted Republican," is beginning to crack.

Only 57% "of white evangelicals are inclined to vote for Republican congressional candidates in the midterm elections, a 21-point drop in support among this critical part of the GOP base," reports the Washington Post.

Even more worrying for the GOP: the poll was taken before the revelation of the Foley sex scandal.

Democrats Could Take Senate

"Democrats are within striking distance of winning control of the Senate in the Nov. 7 elections, USA Today/Gallup Polls in six key states show as the campaigns head into their final month."

Among the findings:
In Maryland, Rep. Ben Cardin (D-MD) leads Lt. Gov. Michael Steele (R) 54% to 39%
In Missouri, Claire McCaskill (D) beats Sen. Jim Talent (R-MO) 48% to 45%, a nine-point swing for McCaskill
In Virginia, Sen. George Allen (R-VA) tops Jim Webb (D) 48% to 45%
In New Jersey, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) leads Tom Kean, Jr. (R) by three points, 46% to 43%
In Rhode Island, Sheldon Whitehouse (D) has opened up a strong lead, beating Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-RI) 50% to 39%
In Tennessee, Rep. Harold Ford, Jr. (D-TN) tops Bob Corker (R) 50% to 45%
There were also two noteworthy gubernatorial polls:
In Maryland, Martin O’Malley (D) bests Gov. Robert Ehrlich (R) 53% to 41%
In Rhode Island, Gov. Donald Carcieri (R) and Lt. Gov. Charles Fogarty (D) are neck-and-neck, with Carcieri leading 47% to 46%.
