Sirius (SIRI) kept its subscriber growth pace on track in the third quarter.

The New York satellite radio shop says it added 441,101 net new users in the quarter ended last week. That takes the company's total user rolls to 5,119,308 million, roughly 2 million behind rival XM (XMSR) .

Sirius reaffirmed its year-end subscriber guidance calling for a total user tally, including unsold new cars, of 6.3 million.

XM's stumbles, including a rash of noncompliant radio emissions, weak car sales at automaker partner GM (GM) and the debut of Howard Stern at Sirius, has allowed Sirius to rapidly gain ground on the satellite radio leader. In the latest quarter, XM added 285,000 net new users, giving it a total of 7.18 million subscribers.

Sirius started the year with about half as many users as XM.

Sirius shares dropped a penny to $4.06 and XM fell 23 cents to $12.35 in morning trading Wednesday.
