His Presidency marked the final split between the WESTERN Republicans (Goldwater/Reagan: Goldwater was a fiscally prudent, low tax/small government kind of guy. He wanted the government out of the bedroom and out of the boardroom. He was pro-abortion rights and pro-privacy and pro-keeping government and religion clearly separated), and the SOUTHERN Republicans: (Bush II and most of the present day Republican national players: perfectly happy to run big deficits, expand the size and Authoritarian power and intrusiveness of government... just so long as they can use the power of government to effect the kind of social changes that they personally desire. Happy to co-mingle government and religion [so long as it is their particularly favored sects]. Opposed to personal privacy or personal liberties.)
