The silliest argument I heard is that liberals condone gay men preying on minors, and they are just nailing Foley because he is a Republican. As you noted, decent sexual behavior from gay or straight adults excludes coming on to minors of either gender. I think that is a general principle that would get majority support in America. The rest is just squealing in political desperation from certain quarters.
