Nagin Enthusiastically Endorses Jefferson (William)

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin says he's enthusiastically supporting eight-term US Representative William Jefferson, who is the target of a federal bribery investigation and faces his first real opposition since his first campaign.

Nagin says Jefferson, who faces 12 challengers in the November seventh primary, was one of the few local elected officials to stand by him during his tough re-election campaign last spring.

The congressman denies the bribery allegations and has not been charged, but a former Jefferson aide and a Kentucky businessman have pleaded guilty in an alleged scheme to get kickbacks for helping the businessman get contracts in Africa.

Nagin has often praised Jefferson's help in steering (b) billions of dollars in federal hurricane recovery aid to the flood-ravaged region, and invited Jefferson to speak at his June first inaugural.

The mayor says he will help Jefferson any way he can in the weeks ahead.
