Doubt it. It is more likely this was a marketing decision. They desperately want to segment the market the same way Intel does. Instead of playing to one of the strengths of their architecture, the glueless SMP, they ignore it. From the beginning, they should have had Socket 754, 939 and 940 with 939 being dual socket capable. But they didn't, presumably because Intel didn't do it that way.
