Hainan's Rural Industries Focus On Local Resources

HAIKOU (Aug. 15) XINHUA - Village-run enterprises in Hainan,
China's southernmost province, have made progress in intensive
development of local resources including tourism, tropical crops and
transportation.

In 1995, countryside enterprises had more than 10 billion yuan in output
value for the first time in the island's history, reaching 11.5 billion
yuan. In the first half of this year, the sector had a growth rate of 40
percent.

The province has over 1,600 farming firms, over 200 rubber-processing
mills, and three large tropical fruit processing enterprises each with
yearly output value of over 100 million yuan.

Local village and township-owned companies have invested two billion
yuan in the tourist sector to set up holiday resorts and hotels. The
rural tourist industry receives more than one million Chinese and
foreign tourists annually.

A large number of villages and townships are involved in the transport
sector, with over 4,000 vehicles and over 200 vessels, and are capable
of shipping 80 percent of the province's farm products.
