With the lack of resolve by most of the Western powers, why shouldn't he press the envelope. He knows that China and the Soviet Union refuse to support any sanctions against countries that go against the UN. He is trying to make a mockery of the international system which is an easy thing to do, but now he is testing the idea of escalation. That would be a momumental mistake at this point.

Going back to the inadequacy of the UN, it is very interesting that we have found a new ally in the war against terrorists - NATO. Since the UN is utterly incapable of any decisions backed by the Security Council, it's time to bring in NATO to improve the global pressure against the Taliban and other terrorists in places like Afghanistan.

Let's think about it for 1 minute, we haven't heard a single thing from our NATO allies for the past 5 years. It is great to see Afghanistan build it's 12,000 US troops to 32,000 NATO troops. It's a step in the right direction before the support against terrorists falls back the other way. We need to smoke them out of every position in Afghnistan & Iraq as the winter approaches.
