...Mr. Griffis, chairman of Kazakstan Goldfields, told shareholders at the annual meeting yesterday that it's difficult but possible to do business in Kazakhstan. "The pioneers are always the ones who get arrows in their back."

He has nothing but harsh words for Kazakhstani officials, whom he accuses of arbitrarily cancelling the company's contract to operate the mines. He has asked the government to repay the $18.5-million (U.S.) the company invested.
