It's unfortunate that people think owning a house should necessarily lead to huge capital gains and appreciation.

Building equity has its own benefits. Those benefits seem to have been lost in the froth of the recent real estate runup in prices.

I'll bet many people will rediscover the value of building equity in the future. Good luck to the younger folks who are still looking to get rich quick via owning real estate.
