Einstein was Einstein because he stood on the shoulders of people like Newton and Reiman and Maxwell and Planck.

If those shoulders hadn't been there he still would have been quite intelligent but would have had to invent algebra, calculus and so forth before he could even begin.

Not to mention paper and ink.
