Bloomberg reporting N Korea nuke yield was about 20 kilotons.
It is estimated that North Korea may currently have enough plutonium for as many as 6 weapons of this type.
The 20 kt equivalent to the Nagasaki (plutonium) (fisson, or A-bomb) bomb and pretty standard for 1st generation plutonium devices.
N. Korea uses plutonium. Pakistan uses Uranium 235 (U235) Iran would likely use U235
India has primarily plutonium, and has gotten yields into the 50 -100 kt range. They also have 9 tons of plutonium, enough for over 100 weapons.
The US and Russia have had both uranium and plutonium weapons. I don't readily know what France, Israel, or the UK have, it is expect they each have over 100 weapons, most with yields over 50 Kilotons.
>>>Wikipedia has some EXCELLENT articles on nuclear weapons, estimated inventories various countries, bomb design (great science fair project unless all your exhibits get classified), bomb effects, history, etc.
Use google for Wikipedia nuclear weapons
US current active inventory is over 2,000 weapons, mostly of a few types. One main air droped type also has a "dial-a-yield" version, with yield from 50 to 250 Kilotons. Most of these are fusion (H-bomb) or enhanced fission weapons.
The US has a small number of 9 Megaton devices. |
