New Virus May Prevent Future Ecoli Sickness

Oct 9, 2006 07:35 AM EDT

Researchers say our e-coli worries will be over in just a few years. That's because a new virus promises to prevent future outbreaks. Studies at Evergreen State College show the phage virus is a natural enemy of e-coli. Research shows it can kill e-coli in the intestines of livestock which would keep it out of our food supply.

Dr. Andrew Brabban, Evergreen Biotechnologist: "Save some lives. It's always good. On this kind of research, it's always nice when you think 'I'm doing something that may make a difference."

Researchers say the virus works quickly. They hope to have the ecoli-killing phage virus ready for widespread use in five years.
