I hasten to defend myself by observing that what I related was not a sample. Guess I should have concluded my tongue-in-cheek remarks with my usual jmho. Of course, we resist sweeping generalizations about other cultures and/or countries. but I don't think I have been grossly unfair to our friends across the sea. Are the Guy Fawkes day celebrations as spectacular as ours? I doubt it. The thing about our July 4 is that it celebrates the Declaration of Independence which has had an international impact in a way that no English documents seems to have had, tht I am aware of. The South American movement for independence from Spain was heavily influenced by ours of July 4 (as well as the French revolution). jmho. Bogtalk
