re: Anyway, I believe the reason why NK wants to talk to us so badly is that their country is suffering horribly and Kim Jong Il is getting desperate. So what do we use as leverage when we talk to them? That's the big question.

I'm not sure they want to talk to us all that much. They just did the most important "talking" they could do.

It's true that our leverage is reduced, primarily because of Iraq. We've blown the opportunity to build consensus as the worlds first "benevolent super power". Our military looks ineffectual since we can't even control a wimp state like Iraq. And we're in a two front conflict so our military isn't available for any other ground war. Mostly a paper tiger if you take our nukes off the table.

What would I like to see? A world consensus that we will not allow ANY trade, in or out, with NK. A world promise that we will do ANYTHING short of military intervention to have the "Great Leaders" regime overthrown, including finding, funding and supporting any NK group that wants to stage a coup. A promise to start a huge effort to inform the NK people of the truth about the "Great Leader". Whatever we had to do... radio broadcasts, drop propaganda brochures, whatever. That would also send a strong message to Iran.

Unfortunately, with our current situation in the world, I don't think those options are open.

The path from 9/11 for this country was so important. We went down the wrong path.
