I discovered some interesting remake links this past weekend. Watching the credits for the Departed, I saw that it was based on the great Hong Kong movie(s) Internal Affairs. I would suggest watching the latter before or after seeing the Departed.
Earlier, I had watched the great French classic that was thought to have launched the New Wave in French cinema in 1967. Le Samourai with Alan Delon, his wife Nathalie, and made by the wonderful director Jeanne Pierre Melville, whose own studio was arsoned in the middle of the making of the film. The movie about a Parisian Hit man, shows up with only minor variations in Jim Jaramusch's Ghost Dogs with Forest Whittaker. I loved both movies. Le Samourai is much barrer with very little dialogue. Delon is at his most handsome/beautiful and was perfect for the role as the ultimate outsider.
