So long as any religion includes the doctrine of trying to increase its numbers, as many do, friction is built in. And, so long as people get angry when confronted with ideas they oppose, that friction will lead to smoke, if not fire.

So, given religion as it is and people as they are, I think Lane has it exactly right. It might be a nice pearly-sounding idea, but I can't envision any diverse society that could achieve such a thing.
