Color me on Lane's side WRT the ACLU. They irritate the snot out of me sometimes, and support many causes I disagree with, but I can see through my irritation to the value they provide to prevent the tyranny of the majority.

To suggest that they have any connection with the government is just plain silly. I'd guess that most gov't agencies would be tickled pink if the ACLU dried up and blew away.

The ACLU doesn't need to support any large organized religion, those entities can bloody well support themselves. The ones that need their support are the small groups with no appreciable funding or large scale organization -- and as much as some might not like it, that includes non-religion.
