My problem is with the term "evangelical".

I understand that. I did a double-take on that, too. I have read about and discussed the subject of Christian demographics a lot and recognize that there are different meanings for various labels. I further recognize, based on my experiences with this thread among others, that I am more nuanced in my word usage than most. So I cut the author of that article some slack and interpreted his word the way I think he meant it. Even if you try for precision, evangelicals and Christian right, while not identical subsets, are close enough for general political discussions. Evangelicals aren't known for being lefties.
