I think it is an exaggeration to say that a power company would send you a PC free in order to charge you for the electricity.

For a home PC that consumes about 250w for 3 hours a day on average, the cost for power is under $4 per month if electricity costs $0.15/watt-hour, which is about 10% of the cost for the monthly charge by our "broadband" ISP. If a notebook is used, the energy cost would be less than half of that.

For server farms, yes, they consume mega watts. However, when divided by the population, it become less significant.

We all appreciate the "Inconvenient Truth" here, but forgive me, I don't mean to ignore the energy consumption and its impact on environment.
