Many, One of my uncles, that I went on wheat harvest from the panhandle in Texas, to mid Nebraska, was the flight engineer on a B-17 flying across the channel to bomb Germany, and the tales he had to tell kept me rapt for hours. His plane got shot up once, but they were able to limp back to base with only one casualty.

One of his stories, was that they landed in a flat pasture to do some minor repairs on the way back to Britain, and saw an abandoned house nearby. When they explored it, they found a wine cellar under ground and filled up the bomb bay with aged wine for the party when they got back. They did get a rap on the knuckles for that one.
