When Bush Lite was elected back in in 2000 I recall thinking: "Oh well, how bad can he be? His father was a pragmatic moderate (except for that Clarence Thomas nomination) and he most certainly will keep the counsel of his father and other experienced moderate republicans... ". I don't think anyone, including Bush Sr. ever anticipated Junior would we hijacked to this extenr by the right wing.

Everyone except a high school jock wannabe and drunken frat boy knows the cardinal rule of survival: "Stay close to your friends - but stay closer to your enemies." That Bush refuses to talk - even when he and the President of Iran were in the same building - is unbelievable.

But then again, given Bush's inability to utter a coherent thought on his own, perhaps that's the best course.

Sensible Republicans must rein in the Bush administration and demand that progress take precedence over empty threats. They could start by listening to James Baker, secretary of state in Bush's father's administration. "I believe in talking to your enemies," Baker said a few days before the Korean nuclear test, endorsing the resumption of bilateral talks with Pyongyang and noting pointedly that he had taken 15 trips to Syria while serving Bush's father.
