I don't know if it was evolution in man as much as the development in his ability to make more complex music- in the same way we have made advances in computers or medicine. Layers of learning and experimenting, gradual increasing complexities.
Also the way Eastern and Western music went in separate directions is fascinating.

So, I don't believe it was biological evolution, which I thought you meant, and I wouldn't use the word evolution for moral concepts, either- esp in terms of independent issues which reflect cultural shifts, not in the biological sense anyway. I suppose if you are using it in the changing gradually or developing sense, it would be applicable.
