"he portrays freedom "to be an absolute, the consequences be damned", in fact while he may support freedom as a principle his arguments where based more on consequences than absolute and inflexible moral principles. He viewed the consequences of less freedom, including less economic/financial freedom, to be negative."

I don't have the background on this but here's my position.

Freedom is living without coercion from government authority, social doctrine, religious dogma or pressure from the elite and powerful. So when anyone talks about individual freedom or for this group or that group, I ask myself whether he is advocating more coercive action or less.

I also notice that some people entangle the concept of freedom with legal rights, making discussion complicated.

"Also there I submit that its a good idea to give a special status to freedom. You don't have to take it as an absolute, as something automatically above all other considerations, to support it being a high priority in its own right. Others are of course have the freedom not to share that particular value."

Special status? I have always held the principle of freedom as having a 'special status'.

I'd like to see more by Phelps on why he thinks Hayek "went too far".

I don't know who they are or what you are talking about when you say 'too far'.
