I don't know a thing about hybrids. I drive less than 5k a year now that I'm retired. I drive a Buick LeSabre and I am careful about how I do that. I get a solid 24 mpg around town. In June I drove it 450 miles each way across Wyoming to see my son. At the end of that trip my mileage was 32.2 mpg. All that in a safe sized and very comfortable car.
