It does seem that many pilots who have newly acquired licenses might be a little cocky about their ability.

I once had to attend a meeting in Salt Lake City which would have required flying over the Sierras and into the Rockies. The owner of the company I worked for had a son who decided he could fly the company plane. ( had his license not yet a year ). He was going to take 4 of us to Salt Lake City.

My husband and I decided that I would buy my own ticket and fly commercial.

A friend of my boss's came to town who was a pilot for NorthWest and was in town for a layover. We asked him about the trip and he said he would never attempt it in a small plane loaded with people and luggage over those mountains!!! too many updrafts and uncertainties though the mountains with alot of extra weight from 4 people and luggage plus a company booth exhibit.

A friend of mine was married to a small airplane mechanic and my nephew is a supervisor for the electrical installation components of Cessna airplanes. They both claim that pilots with new licenses are the most dangerous.

Here in Ca many people have small planes..............many also die each year. Last year someone took his entire family up in a plane in a bad storm.............never filed a flight plan and the commercial flights were grounded. He ran into a mountain side and killed everyone. Had his license less than one month!
