I went to one of the annual meetings that my father in law's bomb group has. They know they hold a place in history, but they are very humble about it.

My favorite character in that story is Soup, the coward. I would tell him, "You're a better man than I, buddy. You got in the plane and you flew."

Every man or woman who gathers up their courage and stands in harm's way is a hero to me.

In the 1980s my father in law found out about something one of his crew did during the bailout and nominated him for recognition. The man was awarded the Silver Star.

My own father was able to attend the ceremony with my father in law in Florida. He was a Marine aviator, a navigator/bombardier on the PBJ (B-25), but never saw any action because of the drop on Hiroshima. To me, that does not disqualify him as a hero.
