Actually enforcing it being off limits might reasonably be considered to be authoritarian, but I don't think I'd give that label to attempts to consider the comment insensitive or out of bounds in a purely social sense. We may be talking about two different things. I'm not talking about laws but about attitude. Anyone who says, in effect, "my way or the highway" regarding an idea is taking an authoritarian tack--taking challenge off the table in favor of his authoritarian decree of truth. Declaring something to be blasphemy is declaring it and its proponents to be "highway." I find blasphemy to be a disreputable construct for that reason. No idea should ever be beyond challenge. You are a lover of ideas and tolerant of challenge. Surely that resonates with you.
