There is certainly a strong connection between declaring an idea to be blasphemy and declaring it out of bounds for discussion. Its not a total and perfect connection, but I understand where you coming from, the connection is rather significant. However absent a theocracy I'm not sure I would consider the declaration to be authoritarian.

Also the idea that any idea should be open to challenge does resonate with me. I might find certain challenges to be bogus and tiresome and not worth paying attention to, but that's different from saying "You shall not make such a challenge". I might at some point declare a subject off limits in a thread I moderate (don't think I ever have, but my threads are dead anyway), but there is a difference between saying "I want an area free of such noxious discussion", and saying "you should not be able to say such noxious things".
