I have seen a lot of "it's us or them". I can't say I see that being the case at the moment- considering many of the "thems" are putatively allies of "us"- like the Saudis- though it's the rulers who are our allies, not the people.

I think we have a lot more to worry about, in terms of harm, from China. China is well on its way to becoming more of a superpower than the old USSR ever was- and imo it's run better. The old USSR had creaky joints, and was obviously never going to overtake us. Can't say I feel so sanguine about the Chinese. I'd say we are putting our eye on a short term distraction, when we really should be watching China. That's NOT to say that we don't deal with terrorists, or the terrorist threats that present themselves (and goodness knows I don't "just" believe in diplomacy), but there are more important threats out there, and I'd feel better if I thought this admin realized that, but they don't.
