The peculiar thing I can't get around is that nobody from the "us or them" camp can explain how it ends. If we preserve us, must we destroy them? Just weaken them? Occupy them all? Enslave them? Convert them? The fact that you can't effectively do any one thing to more than one billion people except to wipe them out (even then we couldn't kill them all, to be practical) makes the whole argument a nonsense. We will never win and we will never lose as long as we look after preserving our own security, economy, polity, culture and society. Eventually cooler heads should prevail and get us back on that track. It's encouraging to see the consistent 60% of Americans who don't support the direction we are going in now.
