Your analogy about "declaring it out of bounds for discussion" is not resonating with me. On your thread, you want to establish a certain ambiance, pursue a certain purpose. Declaring an idea off topic or too much of a hot button is your right to control your space. It's a social construct.

Blasphemy declares an idea, itself, unthinkable and said thinker perverted.

Banishing behavior from one's space is not the same as declaring an idea unconscionable.

Religion is nothing if not a set of ideas, ideas held based on tradition, indoctrination, experience, reason, and faith. The only things special about a religious idea set are that the holding of variations out of conscience is protected by law from the coercion of the state and that, being in large part belief rather than fact based yet being closely held, they are sensitive. For both reasons we tread more lightly where religious ideas are concerned.

But the tool of blasphemy is the heavy-handed tool of the inquisitor, not the tool of the inquisitive. It's use IMO is every bit as destructive as the insensitive treatment of religious beliefs.
