People think I am going overboard when I talk about how life-hating the econut movement is. Ayn Rands series of essays that were published in '68 as "The New Left, the anti-industrial revolution," spelled it out. Here is some recent, excellent examples.

The Marshall Applewhite enviros
By DonSurber

Enviros seem like a religious cult to me. I know, some see them as socialists: The old watermelon theory of being green on the outside but red on the inside. But I look at Al Gore and realize these enviros are religious fanatics, bent on saving us. They tell us we must repent our sinful, wasteful ways or die in the fires of hell on Earth under global warming.

They aren’t quite sure if it is the story of Noah, with the world flooded not by God but by melted glaciers (never mind that glaciers have been shrinking for 10,000 years now and left some pretty good farmland in Ohio) or whether it will be a parched Earth as dry as the Sahara (resettled by penguins) or a fall of the modern Sodom and Gomorrah under the skies reddened by an angry Gaia, avenging the loss of the habitat of white tigers.

New Scientist had an article this month that finally framed the issue for me. There are some enviros who truly hate mankind. The cover article of the magazine, “Imagine Earth without people,” is like medieval text on mankind. We are sinners who destroy the Earth. It is filled with jewels like these:

“If they could, the other species we share Earth with would surely vote us off the planet.”

And, “Left once more to its own devices, Nature would begin to reclaim the planet, as fields and pastures reverted to prairies and forest, the air and water cleansed themselves of pollutants, and roads and cities crumbled back to dust.”

And, “If tomorrow dawns without humans, even from orbit the change will be evident almost immediately, as the blaze of artificial light that brightens the night begins to wink out.”

And, “In the oceans, too, fish populations will gradually recover from drastic overfishing.”

And, “The humbling -- and perversely comforting -- reality is that the Earth will forget us remarkably quickly.”

Such nihilism incorporates environmentalism with PeTA worship and atheism. God, after all, made Man in His own image, so a believr in God really could not embrace the concept of a world being better without Man.

It is a fascinating article, like reading the diaries of Marshall Applewhite before he fled the planet along with his cult followers.

Or maybe even some pre-monotheistic text in which people worshipped cats and dogs.

The speculation in the article is fun to read:

“Feral descendants of domestic animals and plants, too, are likely to become permanent additions in many ecosystems, just as wild horses and feral pigs already have in some places. Highly domesticated species such as cattle, dogs and wheat, the products of centuries of artificial selection and inbreeding, will probably evolve back towards hardier, less specialised forms through random breeding. ‘If man disappears tomorrow, do you expect to see herds of poodles roaming the plains?’ asks Chesser. Almost certainly not - but hardy mongrels will probably do just fine. Even cattle and other livestock, bred for meat or milk rather than hardiness, are likely to persist, though in much fewer numbers than today.”

But the reality is, this is not just an intellectual exercise, but the goal, the mission. The true believers have so demonized modern civilization that they want to rid the world of it entirely.

That’s creepy -- and dangerous. donsurber.blogspot.com
