WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--Retail sales unexpectedly fell during September, but demand for goods outside the automotive and gasoline sectors climbed strongly, suggesting the economic slowdown isn't too sharp.

Sales decreased by a seasonally adjusted 0.4%, the Commerce Department said Friday. August sales increased by 0.1%, revised from a previously reported 0.2% increase.

Excluding both autos and gasoline, all other retail sales increased 0.8% in September - the strongest climb since January's 2.5%. Demand excluding gas and autos rose 0.4% in August.

The median estimate of 21 economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires had overall retail sales rising 0.3% in September.

The retail sales report is a window to how Americans part with their money. And consumer spending is a pivotal part of the equation used to figure out how the economy is faring. Spending makes up about 70% of gross domestic product.

Auto and parts retail sales were unchanged in September, after falling 0.4% in August. Outside the auto sector, all other retail sales fell 0.5%. Economists expected no change. Sales excluding autos were 0.2% higher in August.

Gas station sales plunged by a record 9.3% last month after decreasing 1.3% in August. Analysts say lower gasoline prices pushed down the value of station receipts last month. Stripping away sales at gas stations, demand at all other retailers was up 0.6% in September.

Demand at retailers peddling home improvement goods climbed last month despite the housing sector slowdown. Furniture store sales advanced 0.2% after falling 0.1% in August. Building material and garden stores sales rose by 0.6% after increasing in August at the same rate.

Elsewhere, sales rose 1.1% at general merchandise stores; 0.2% at health and personal care stores; 1.0% at restaurants and bars; 1.1% at mail order and Internet retailers; 0.2% at electronics and appliance stores; 1.1% at sporting goods, hobby and book stores; and 3.0% at clothing stores.

Demand fell 0.3% at food and beverage stores.
