I may just go for a Sun server if Apple pulls out of this sector.

The odds of Apple pulling out are slim to none. They have been steadily increasing their presence in the server/storage market for several years.

I thought Xserve had already proved itself in the last 3 years but I'm starting to question Apple's intentions. Anyone that wants to buy one these days is SOL even for a G5 model!!! I'm puzzled.

Don't be: right now XServe is the lowest volume unit in the computer line so it gets the least amount of attention and priority during the transition. Once the XServes are available (i.e. now the platform transition is complete), expect to see a steady ramp up (and at some point scaling to larger systems) esp. since the Unix/Intel/VMWare (i.e. windows server hosting) combination positions it very nicely in the data center as it has the ability to run virtually anything that a traditional Unix or Windows box can at a very competitive price point.
