I've heard and read that so many times, it must be some modernist talking point. Most parishes offered more than one Mass on Sunday. Low Mass was early, High Mass was later in the morning.

Vatican II also did away with the Leonine Prayers after Low Mass. Remember those? I think there were three. (It's been awhile since I've been) One was Hail Holy Queen, another was the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel. Remember how it started?....St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.....

I don't think the promoters of Vatican II wanted Catholics to be so militant anymore....
