I think it would be more accurate to describe MU as primarily a DRAM manufacturer. They are making a major effort to get out of just DRAMs and are now doing some ASICs as well as making PC's.

In terms of cheaper DRAM prices, alternatives to getting rid of the 16Mb equipment include shrinking the design and simply upgrading to 64Mb. Assuming that you have a "state of the are" 16 Mb factory, I believe that most of the equipment used for 16Mb production can be directly translated to 64Mb production: i.e., a 4-fold increase in DRAM ouput with minimal expenditure for equipment. Equipment upgrades would only be for the critical layers and to remove bottlenecks.
