in August of last year, VLO ran from the low 40s to the high 50s in the space of a week or two. from Jan 31 to Feb 14 it fell from 62-63 to 48, then from that point it ran up to 70 in April. just recently it was at 46 and change and now it is already up 15% from there.

real picture of stability, that -g-.

so, a jump of 15% off the lows makes people think they've missed the move... until it goes up another 25%, then they pile on and it goes up more until it goes back down again -g-.

but unlike semiconductors or drillers and other volatile sectors, i don't think of VLO as a trader's plaything. i think of it as a value stock.

my personal feeling is that VLO's price has nothing to do with valuation. but i don't think that condition will last forever--it might take two or three more years, but eventually i expect at least a market multiple on VLO. if that happens, these prices in the low 50s will look very good in retrospect, imo.

at least, that's the way i'm betting, in soize. i also have huge bets on SU and COS.

decent plug for energy stocks from WeedenCo's energy strategist in Barron's today, especially Canadian oil sands.
