Spinach contamination linked to manure on ranch

Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal - 10-13-06

Health officials said Friday they pinpointed cow manure on a Salinas Valley ranch as a source of E. coli with DNA that matches a strain that killed three people and made at least 200 ill.

The ranch is within a mile of spinach fields. Four ranches in San Benito and Monterey counties -- including the ranch where the manure was discovered -- are being investigated.

"This is a significant finding," said Dr. Kevin Reilly, deputy director of the Prevention Services Division of the California Department of Health Services.

The FDA did not identify the location or names of the ranches under investigation, citing confidentiality concerns until a final conclusion is reached. But investigators did say the ranch where the manure was found is part of a beef cattle operation, and part of the grounds are leased to another farmer who grows ready-to-eat produce.

In addition, investigators said there was evidence that wild pigs had been roaming the property. The animals, the irrigation water, and worker hygiene were all being explored as possible sources of the organism.

San Juan Bautista-based Natural Selection Foods LLC, which processed and packaged the spinach at the center of the outbreak, has repeatedly said its factories were not to blame and that the source of the outbreak was most likely environmental, stemming from the fields.
